“I was camping in Northland. Best thing; got out of Auckland. I actually got away from the traffic and the grind; that was the best thing.
I grew up in Central Auckland, in Greenlane. I had a really happy childhood. Was a pretty small childhood. Safe, yeah, my family were always the different ones in the street. We didn’t really fit that Greenlane model, but I had a lovely childhood. I was one of five kids.
It’s good just to leave the house behind, leave your whole life behind, and go and do something totally different. I think part of what I loved about it this year was that we met up with my cousin and her family, and other friends, and it was nice to be able to just spend time with them. Easily spend time with them. Slowly. Have a drink every night. Our kids enjoyed each other’s company. That was, for me, was the best part of it, I think.
I’m intensely curious; I like to try new things, and I’m interested in people feeling part of something or at least welcomed to be part of something. I think that’s probably one of my biggest motivators.
I design knitting patterns. I was a stay at home mother. I was a lawyer, then I was a stay at home mother for about 15 years, and I was a breastfeeding counsellor during that time, and helped run kids’ groups, and now my kids are at school, I have taught myself to design knitting patterns. So, I have a little business that I’ve grown; designing knitting patterns. So, part of that is making a community for those knitters. Yeah, for secret knitters.”
