Garth | Ōtāhuhu
“My name is Garth and I live in Ōtāhuhu. I suppose with us it’s a lack of money.
I’m a student, my wife’s a nurse, but because she so-calls ‘earns too much’ I can’t get a student allowance, so we’re living on just one wage.
I grew up in Christchurch in the South Island. I have six children, been married for 24 years, and the most thing important to me is my family, my kids. We just go out to places like Ambury Farm or something to spend time together as a family. It’s just doing stuff like that, that kind of calms us down a bit, takes all that stuff off my mind. Having quality time together as a family. Hopefully, when I finish my degree in three years, I’ll be able to get a job and be able to help out with the bills.
I was a corrections officer for a bit, for about 10 years, then went driving trucks for a little while, and just decided it was time to make a change, and instead of trying to chase that low wage, I wanted to try and better my schooling so I can get a better job.”
