“I was stuck. I was really stuck, and I really wanted to go home, and I went on the wrong bus and that was a couple of years ago.
I went on the bus that goes to Auckland City, and I only had enough money to go to my course. I was doing a course, diploma, and I thought it was stopping in Manukau, but it went straight to the motorway and I went straight to Auckland City. I didn’t have enough to go back, but these nice people gave me, some money to go back to Manukau and start over.
I really want to thank them, because I was in a bit of nowhere, and I would have been stuck right in Auckland City, nowhere to go home. They’re university teachers and I want to thank them for giving me a chance to get back home, and I did thank them when I saw them on the bus.
I, I used to see a lot of, I don’t know, people who lived on the street. I used to give them veges or food, because I can’t give them money. I think kindness is all over the place. You’ve got to find it when it’s least expected. I am pretty kind to other people when they are quite lost, or they want help. I was kind to this lady. She was walking really slowly. I asked her if she wanted help with her groceries, because she was having a bit of trouble walking on the bridge, and she was walking really slowly. There was another person who wanted to help her, so I thought, I’d just take her groceries and I said to take her time. I said, why didn’t you take a trolley, but she left her trolley at home, and she didn’t know she was going to carry heavy stuff. I felt sorry for her, but there was someone who knew her, so I was glad that someone was there.
Being kind to everything. You will get back, you will get back what you deserve. I think you just have to remember your values and showing how to respect people. I think that’s the important way.”
