How are you?

Simon has found peace and joy from moving out of the city to Akaroa, where life is slower.
“Normally everyone wants to hold on to what they’ve got. But if you actually hand it over and say ‘hey come and help me’ you’ll just be amazed at what happens.
I’m enjoying it more and more each day. Historically, I’ve had a very good life. I’ve been blessed with healthy children, a stable marriage, and success in business. However, when I reflect on it holistically, there have definitely been some serious challenges. There was the earthquake, the global financial crisis, and Covid, all of which took a toll.
As I’ve gotten into my fifties, I started to ask myself, “Do I want to keep doing this for another ten years just to make a bit more money, or do I want to start living?” I’d find myself going back to work on a Sunday and thinking, “I don’t know why I’m going back.” Eventually, it became clear that I needed a change. I decided I wanted to spend more time on things that brought me joy.
We have a property where I’ve invested a lot of time and energy into creating a small orchard and garden. I’ve got some sheep and stock, and it’s been a real pleasure to develop that lifestyle. It’s not a business, nor is it a farm—it’s just a lifestyle. The enjoyment I’ve gotten from this life change has surprised me. As a city boy just a few years ago, I knew nothing about farming or gardening. I’ve learned a lot through trial and error, using YouTube and other resources.
We now have a large greenhouse, a big garden, fruit trees, chickens, and plenty of eggs. We’re able to provide food for our families, whānau, and the wider community, and it’s been incredibly rewarding.”
