“Oh, that would be 1973 when I saw Enter the Dragon by Bruce Lee. Well, it led me to get my second dan in Karate. It set me off on a sort of a personal, lifestyle training, keeping fit kind of thing, and I still train today. So it must have been very inspiring if I’m still training. I was 13 in 1973.
I grew up in a small town in South Waikato called Putaruru. It’s a small timber town during the ‘60s and ‘70s, highly serviced the agricultural sector.
Well what’s the most important thing to me, over the last 15 years would be faith – having faith in God. That’s the primary thing, but so many other things, you know? Current issues of the day, housing, the homeless. Apparently we’re the least corrupt, one of the least corrupt countries in the world, but I mean to say, do you really believe that? We’ve got homeless and we’ve got people drawing $300,000.00 salaries out of the Beehive, and we’ve got homeless people. Well, that’s important. That’s a major important issue I think.
I think looking back on it would have to be Bruce Lee’s – I guess his personality and his charisma, but not only that; his message was about freedom, and that’s what I’m all about – freedom. So you can interpret it in any way you like. His concept was freedom from a classical mess. Well, I’d suggest to you that carried on with me as a freedom from institutional mess, I guess. You know, carrying it on into my everyday life and thinking. So yeah it has been a huge inspiration for me. That’s probably why I’m not doing the census. At the moment I’m not doing much at all. I’m a Registered Nurse. I worked in mental health and forensic psychiatry. So, yeah I’m just looking around for something else to do at the moment.”
