“Well, I had a challenge this morning taking my dog to the vet. She always scratches me and things, so that’s a challenge to get her done for operations and things like that.
At 91 you expect all that, don’t you? Yeah, I’ve had my spleen out, that’s about it. My freedom, my good health; that’s one of my greatest at 91. I’m still able to look after myself, drive, play bowls. I’ve got a lot to thank for in my blessings.
I was born in New Plymouth in 1926. I lived in Auckland over the years, in Thames, but now back to Leigh. I’ve been married twice and had two children. I’ve worked as a supervisor at Cambridge Clothing for about 20 years in my youth, and I think one of the greatest things that happened to me at Cambridge was doing all the overtime and working hard; I bought my first car. So, that was a great excitement.
I lost my husband second husband 24 years ago, so I’ve been on my own for 24 years, but I’ve had a good life. I just think at my age, I used to be a great worrier and now if one of the children or somebody upsets me, or something goes wrong, I usually turn to God and ask for His help, and just say well there’s nothing I can do about it get on with it, and things just work out. There’s no use worrying about it. You can’t do anything about it. So, I think that’s about it.
Communication in marriage; that is the greatest thing, and trust. Confidence in yourself; I think that’s about the best thing you can do, and I must say I have a Brandy every night at half past five. I put that down to my longevity.”
