How are you?

Teaching has given Lucy (Ōtautahi) a community that reflects the diverse fabric of Aotearoa.
“Being in a good place means that you’re able to share that goodness and kindness with others. That’s what makes life go around I think.
I’m doing good, thanks. Like I said, one of the perks of being a teacher is getting to work with so many different people from different walks of life: different families, cultures, and ethnicities. It’s like a big melting pot of the community you’re a part of, and it’s really cool to be such an important part of that.
It gives everyone, the kids, myself, and all the other teachers, a chance to engage with so many different cultures, religions, and perspectives. And I think that’s so important because it reflects the world we live in today. We need to give kids these real-life experiences, to help them grow and understand.
When you’ve got the goodness inside of you and you share it with others, that’s when your day really starts to go well. But if you’re feeling stressed or not in a good place, it can be tough when you walk into the classroom. But honestly, when you’re greeted by thirty smiling faces, it can change everything. Those little moments really help shift your emotions.
The ability to love, be accepting, and inclusive—it’s what makes teaching so special. I can think of so many moments in the classroom where my heart felt so warm walking out. It’s those values you’re teaching the children, and seeing them live out those lessons in front of you. That’s what makes it all so rewarding.”
