“What would I would say to my eleven-year-old self? Take as many chances as you can in Auckland, because it’s the place to be at the moment, and it’s just a fantastic place to live.
I spent 30 years in Whangārei, which is about 2 and a half hours north of Auckland. I have been in Auckland for about 25 years. I’ve just celebrated my 20th wedding anniversary with my wife and we couldn’t be happier living in Auckland. It is a safe place, but again you must be careful and just keep an eye on yourself.
How have I been married for 24 years? Dedication, listening to each other. I’ve got a lovely lady, we talk to each other, we understand each other, and we met in an RSA one night just purely by chance, I asked her out, and we’ve been together ever since. Relationships are very important; you’ve got a talk to each other, you’ve got to understand each other, if you want a marriage to work.
She’s been a very, very dedicated person – she works with special needs, which need 24 hour care 7 days a week and she’s been doing that job for 14 years, and I take my hat off to her, because it’s a job that I could not do. It takes a special person to work with those kind of people.
I’m a truck driver and I do heavy haulage in Auckland, around Auckland, out of Auckland – wherever I’ve got to go I go.”
