What do you hope to achieve this year?
Kahurangi | Te Tai Poutini
With the support of a strong, loving whānau, Kahurangi and his partner are carving out their own path to raising tamariki.
“I’m not interested in living my life the way someone else wants ot live it.
I’m going to live it the best way I believe and at the moment, I believe that is a combination of the mātauranga, the stories, the practices of our tīpuna and bringing them forward into the future with the advancements of today.
Why would I give up the privilege of being able to help raise my children? So for me and for our whānau, as soon as we had children, we straight away decided these are the things that we are going to do. You aren’t going to go and work five days a week and spend two days with your kids.
One of the reasons we’ve been able to pull this off as a whānau is that our family support us. My mother has always supported us. They understand the struggles of colonisation. They have a strong understanding of who we want to be and where we want to go.
I constantly say I’m just a recipient of intergenerational wealth – not necessarily wealth in terms of money – but wealth in terms of love, in terms of respect, in terms of support. Tautoko, unflinching. “You want to go do this son? Then you go do it. Just do it wholeheartedly.”
