Cynatra – Mt Roskill
“My last message was to my brother this morning, asking if he could bring his van down from up North to pick up something for our flat.
He’s an apprentice electrician so he has a work van, which is quite handy.
I was born in Brisbane, Australia and moved over to New Zealand in my intermediate years, and then grew up in Whangārei during high school and moved down to Auckland to study, and have not looked back. I have previously done a degree in graphic design and have now worked for a year in a retail company. I have now gone back to uni to study digital media, thinking it would progress into a more open field within graphic design.
When I first came here I was quite overwhelmed, because obviously when I moved here to New Zealand we lived in Whangārei, which is quite a small community in comparison. But I’ve found my feet, and coming across a few websites that kind of help you navigate the best cafes and little things like that, which has been really helpful.
I found the Urban List, because I’m a bit of a foodie. It’s very helpful finding those little secret spots that everyone kind of knows about, but you don’t know how to find or where to go.
The pay gap for females and males at the moment has been a bit of a hot topic, and it’s made me more aware about it. Racism, I feel, is still definitely something that affects us and we stereotype a lot of people, and for me personally it’s been one of those things that you’ve got to try and push those boundaries.
There is so much diversity; it’s like a melting pot, especially for me being a creative. I find that the people that I come across have been eye-opening, and they kind of change my perspective. So the diversity in this town is very helpful being a designer.”
