About This is Aotearoa
This is Aotearoa is a kaupapa dedicated to promoting community wellbeing through storytelling.
We’re here to create positive change by sharing stories highlighting what things, no matter how big or small, impact our wellbeing in our everyday lives. Each story offers a glimpse into the lives of New Zealanders, uniting those who call Aotearoa home. By telling these stories, we can help to shape the Aotearoa we envision—a place where the whakapapa of our tamariki, rangatahi, and whānau is protected, and where everyone can feel safe and included, and thrive. Together, we can all play a part in shaping the future we want for our tamariki, children and mokopuna.
Each month, we travel across Aotearoa to ask everyday people a question of the month. Their stories are shared on Facebook, Instagram, Youtube and TikTok. These stories weave the fabric of Aotearoa, reminding us of our shared experiences – the joys, the challenges, and everything in between.
How to get involved

Individuals can also volunteer to be interviewed by contacting us at kiaora@thisisaotearoa.co.nz. Let us know where you’re based, and we’ll reach out when we’re planning to visit your area.
Aotearoa Humanity Project
Since its launch in 2017 this special project has shared the stories of thousands of New Zealanders across its social platforms. In sharing the stories of Aotearoa, it shared the humanity that defines this country. Previously the Aotearoa Humanity Project, this project began by interviewing people in Auckland with the goal of sharing people’s everyday experiences in order to promote connection, empathy and support.
This quickly grew and the Aotearoa Humanity Project team broadened their reach by travelling to Aotearoa to capture the stories of people from across the motu. The initiative took a break in 2021 and in 2024 is back with a fresh perspective and a renewed sense of purpose – This is Aotearoa. The focus of our kaupapa is on celebrating the rich diversity of experiences and whakapapa that make Aotearoa unique.
