Weiwei – Panmure
“The latest experience of sharing a meal is at Chinese Lantern Festival.
We have had lunch in a restaurant which is Manukau Road. The name of the restaurant is Golden Jade, and it was quite good. We are a group of people that came from the same Chinese city, which is Shanghai, about 10 people. We occasionally have this kind of lunch, and actually we are all elderly people. Some dishes, it’s not very easy to cook at home, and we like to have it in the restaurant.
The Year of the Rooster; I think people would be encouraged to be more hard-working, because a rooster is a kind of bird – they get up very early in the morning, and they make noise like asking people to get up and start a day’s work. So the Year of the Rooster, I think people would be reminded; you need to work harder.
Living in Auckland is basically safe, but we still have to be very cautious from time to time, because one of my friends actually got assaulted not very long time ago; about three or four months ago, which happened in Panmure.
Then I used to visit lagoon swimming pool quite regularly, but also once I got actually assaulted in the ladies changing room. So after that I actually would think twice to go there. Sometimes it’s not very safe.
Actually, you know, I have been living in this city for over 20 years now, and to be honest, I actually have some encounters with the New Zealand Police, and I think a few of them are quite – have bad attitude towards Chinese people. I remember in 2008, Easter time and there was a car accident involved with three vehicles.
My husband actually was the victim, but when the police came to deal with this incident, he was treated like the culprit. The real culprit was treated like victim, because they are not Chinese, but we are. Finally we actually didn’t get any fair treatment, and we still have to pay everything caused by this accident. Things like this, I really don’t like it, but overall, most people are very good.
This library is good. I almost visit this library almost every day. Most of the time I will come here to read a newspaper and borrow some books. I think library is a very good place for people to communicate with each other and to build up friendship.”
