TIA Social Media Moderation Policy

Purpose
This policy outlines the guidelines and procedures for moderating content on This is Aotearoa social media platforms. The goal is to maintain an inclusive, respectful, and engaging digital space that honours the mana of storytellers and reflects our commitment to manaakitanga.

We view all digital platforms as an online whare — a welcoming space where everyone is offered a seat for kōrero. This philosophy underpins our approach to social media moderation and is guided by the value of manaakitanga, ensuring respectful interaction and safeguarding the mana and tapu of everyone under our digital roof.

Scope
This policy applies to all This is Aotearoa social media platforms, including but not limited to the website, Facebook, Instagram, Youtube and TikTok.

Community Guidelines
We encourage open and constructive discussions, but never at the expense of someone’s mana or dignity. To ensure a positive environment, we ask that all users adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Manaakitanga: Treat all users with respect and manaakitanga. Personal attacks, harassment, or hate speech will not be tolerated.
  • Relevance: Ensure that comments and posts are relevant to the topic being discussed.
  • No Spam: Unsolicited promotions, advertisements, or repetitive posts will be removed.
  • Privacy: Do not share personal information about others without their consent.

Moderation Practices
Our moderation team will:

  • Monitor posts and comments regularly. We reserve the right to delete or hide posts and comments that violate our community guidelines and/or contain:
    • Inflammatory or hate speech including racism, sexism and religious bigotry
    • Spam, bot posts and the advertising of anything illegal
    • Private contact details of people who haven’t given you permission to share them
    • Abusive or violent language
    • Threats to other people
    • Nuisance or repetitious postings
    • Factually incorrect or deliberately misleading information. This includes misinformation that we know to be untrue and that might scare people or cause worry.
  • Endeavour to protect the This is Aotearoa community. We reserve the right to block and mute any members who go against our community guidelines.
  • Respond to user inquiries and concerns in a timely manner.
  • Use discretion in assessing whether content is appropriate.

Reporting Violations
Users can report violations of this policy by emailing kiaora@thisisaotearoa.co.nz or messaging our platforms directly. We take all reports seriously and will investigate them promptly.

Consequences of Violations
Violations of this policy may result in:

  • Removal of offending content.
  • A warning to the user.
  • Temporary or permanent suspension of the user’s account, depending on the severity of the violation.

Appeals Process
Users who believe their content has been removed or their account has been blocked unjustly can appeal the decision by contacting kiaora@thisisaotearoa.co.nz
